Views of magnificent mountains like Mt. Hood, the flowing Willamette River, roses and trees everywhere, and a vibrant art and festival calendar make Portland a great holiday destination. Portland is also the microbrewery capital of the world, with more small breweries and specialist bars than any other US city.

Portland was originally a spot on the Willamette River between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver known as “the clearing”. The name Portland was decided on a coin toss, best of three, between two immigrants who wanted to name the place after their own home town. Francis W Pettygrove of Portland, Maine, beat Asa Lovejoy of Boston, Massachussetts – if he had lost, the city would have been named Boston, Oregon!

Summers in Portland are generally warm and dry, and winters can be mild to chilly, and quite damp.

Portland has been referred to as the home of the Microbrew revolution in the United States, sometimes being called Beervana or Brewtopia. Portland actually has more breweries than Cologne, Germany! You can be sure that there are some very good beers to sample, all made with local ingredients. Most of the breweries offer tours, just call ahead to check the times. There are even opportunities to watch movies while drinking great beer – check out The Mission on Northwest, or the Baghdad on Hawthorne.
