In 1906, three quarters of San Francisco was destroyed by an earthquake and subsequent fire. It is estimated that several thousand people died, and more than half the population of the city were left homeless. Reconstruction, however, began immediately, and with great rapidity, culminating in a celebration at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915.

San Francisco has now developed into one of the worlds foremost financial and technology centers, and also positioning itself as a biotechnology and biomedical hub and research center.

San Francisco enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with mild, wet winters and dry summers. Surrounded on three sides by water, San Francisco’s climate is moderated by the cool currents of the Pacific Ocean, producing remarkably mild weather with little seasonal temperature variation. One of the side effects of the combination of cold ocean currents and warm land is the famous San Francisco fog – during the spring and early summer it is possible for the western half of the city to be completely fogbound all day!

Check out the Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District. Completed in 1915, in time for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the Palace houses the Exploratorium. The Exploratorium is a collection of more than 650 exhibitions of science, art and human perception. Check out the science of the things you do every day!

Of course, on of the most famous destinations in San Francisco is Alcatraz Island, also known as The Rock, the decommissioned former prison. Home to such famous inmates as Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly, you can take a tour of the prison and feel what it was like to be incarcerated. (TIP: Tickets for the ferry to Alcatraz are available at the Alcatraz Cruises website, but they sell out fast – buy in advance!)

To get a great view of the famous Golden Gate Bridge, head over to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Overlooking the bridge, it has spectacular views of the city and the bay.
